Harlem One Stop Inc, a Harlem-based non-profit, makes it easier for the travel market and independent travelers to navigate neighborhoods uptown. Recently launched is “Explore Harlem NYC” a destination website geared to the travel trade, tour operators and those interested in learning more about all that’s available in Harlem and Washington Heights. The user-friendly online resource also includes directives on how to access area businesses and cultural venues.
“Ten years ago we saw the need for a comprehensive portal to showcase the rich and diverse cultural offerings in northern Manhattan and Harlem and answered with Harlem One Stop, a community based cultural tourism program,” says, Yuien Chin, Executive Director of Harlem One Stop. “Today, despite rapid change and improvement on so many fronts, there is still trepidation for some who question the safety of these sections of New York, and who are uncertain about access related to travel, tours and services here. And, so, we again answered with ‘Explore Harlem NYC’ a destination website to help newcomers and visitors get around stress free. We will help to connect tour operators, media, and others with support services, tours, entertainment and dining experiences. Harlem One Stop and Explore Harlem NYC, as it were, are maps required to discover the hidden treasures and experiences that lie beyond the beaten path.”
ExploreHarlemNYC.com offers a flow of events generally not highlighted in the City’s mainstream media calendars and interactive tools for visitors to create and print a personal Harlem itinerary in map form. Public amenities and transportation access points are also noted along with helpful tips and local customs.
Attracting more visitors to the northern section of Manhattan was the impetus for founding Harlem One Stop. New York City’s official tourism organization, NYCgo, reported over 55 million visitors in 2015 with expectation for another banner year in 2016. It is Yuien Chin’s hope that “..at some point, Harlem and other uptown neighborhoods will receive their fair share of visitors. Until such time, we will continue along with other cultural organizations and businesses to promote and showcase the wonderful, diverse and unique experiences awaiting visitors uptown! So, come, explore Harlem!”
